Unlike most fund managers in South Africa, we are entirely owner-managed and know what it means to give up equity to a new partner.

We only invest in companies where executive management holds a significant shareholding ─ before and after our investment ─ and where we can bring value to the business over and above the funding we provide.

What kind of companies do we invest in?
We seek companies with strong entrepreneurial management and strong growth prospects, whether those prospects are immediately ahead or achievable after addressing various operating or financial challenges.

We generally don’t invest in seed or start-up businesses, but will consider investing at any stage after that, even if the business has yet to reach profitability. Once we are engaged, we work together with management to design a strategy, capital structure and equity incentives that will enable the achievement of mutually agreed performance objectives.

We make equity investments.
Our investments are always equity in nature, although they may be structured with debt securities in addition to ordinary or preferred shares. We are not bankers and will never ask individual executives or shareholders for suretyships or personal guarantees.

Although we do occasionally purchase controlling interests in buyout situations, we prefer to hold significant minority shareholding positions whenever the economics of the investment allow.

Our investment philosophy is based on partnering management, not dictating to them. We typically hold individual investments for 3-7 years, but do expect to sell at some point and will only invest in companies that offer promising exit possibilities in due course.
