We follow a proven business-centric, rather than transaction-centric, approach to making investments. This means that we seek to create value through growing the underlying business and improving its profitability, rather than using financial engineering techniques (although these will also be deployed where appropriate).
Such an approach requires a deep understanding of a company’s business model prior to investment and hands-on involvement with its management team post-investment. Accordingly, a pre-condition for any investment is that Horizon Equity Partners’ professionals are able to establish excellent working relationships with the management of potential portfolio companies, as well as being able to agree on a value creation plan.
Our business-centric approach also requires us to actively assist company management in further developing and implementing that value creation plan post-investment. While a Horizon Equity Partners executive will nearly always sit on the board of an investee company, most of our contribution is made between board meetings.
The extent and nature of our contribution varies from company to company, but will, typically, involve support in one or more of the following areas:
- Business strategy development
- Introductions to professional advisors
- Access to international markets
- Access to technology and suppliers
- Planning and negotiation of corporate partnerships
- Organisational development and recruiting
- Improving control, reporting and corporate governance procedures
- Financing strategy and raising third party capital
- Acquisition and sale of businesses
In addition to our executive team, we are also able to draw on a valuable pool of advisors for this purpose. These include current or former senior managers from leading companies, such as Altech, Amalgamated Appliances, Dimension Data, Fedsure, IBM, Monitor Company, and Tongaat Hulett.
