Some of the better-known companies in which we have invested include:
- EC-Hold, an Internet security supplier.
Horizon Equity Partners provided this company with start-up capital in 1996 and exited through a listing on the JSE in 1998.
- Renaissance Retail, a specialist bedding retailer.
In 1996, Horizon Equity Partners provided this company with a combination of replacement and expansion capital prior to its listing on the JSE two years later.
- Denny Mushrooms, South Africa’s leading mushroom producer.
Horizon Equity Partners financed an MBO of the business from its corporate owners in 1999. The company was sold to a trade buyer, some five years later.
- Prism Holdings, a secure e-payment company.
Listed on the JSE at the time of Horizon Equity Partners’ PIPE investment in 2003, the entire company was sold to Net-1, a NASDAQ listed corporation, in 2006.
- Kanderlane/ATM Solutions, South Africa’s leading independent deployer of ATM machines.
Horizon Equity Partners provided early stage expansion capital to the company in 2001. Part of this investment was realised in 2005 through selling to a financial buyer, and the balance was sold to a trade buyer one year later.
Each of these transactions returned at least 5x cost, with gross IRRs ranging from 30% per annum to 136% per annum on a fully realised basis (1).
They are not an exhaustive list of our investment successes, but provide an illustrative cross section of the kind of deals and industry sectors within which we have made strong returns historically.
We also have a number of case studies available upon request, if you would like to know more about our past deals.
What does this mean for investors?
It means that we excel at finding superior investment opportunities over multi-year timeframes, through good economic times and bad. Although performance does vary from fund to fund as a result of economic conditions, we have always produced strongly positive returns to our investors.
What does this mean for our portfolio companies?
In most cases, it means that we work successfully with the management teams of these companies to create and realise significant company value. Many of our former portfolio companies are thriving enterprises today that have created jobs, paid taxes, and produced significant wealth for their employees and shareholders.
